Advantages
Having good zones can help players to stay longer period of time in the game, protecting from commit a lot of fouls.Zone defense is less tiring compare to man-to-man defense and can tighten the guard as a team.
Normally, most zones pack the defenders in the lane, allowing the offensive team to take long range shots. However, it can be effective if they are poor at long range shots.
Playing zone defense helps to slow down the tempo of the game and also making the offensive team to spend more time in passing around the basketball before shooting it.
A player with a poor defense can usually hide in a zone as the teammates will help to cover if he/she is beaten.
Teams that play a zone when the opponents inbound the basketball under the basket to help avoid easy scores off of screen plays.
Trapping zones can disrupt the offensive players with inexperienced play and force turnovers.
Disadvantages
Playing zone defense usually tend to be weak on the perimeter. It is effective for the teams with good outside shooting skills. In zone defenses, naturally they have gaps and teams that pass well or have players with good penetrating skills will have the advantage to score.
It is a poor strategy to use if the team is behind in the game as zones generally allow the offense to take more time to create an open shot on each possession, which limits the time remaining for the losing team to catch up.
Rebounding from a zone is harder than in a man to man defense. It's more difficult to figure out which person to box out when in a zone defense.
It can be confusing in knowing the responsibilities and who should guard the ball, causing it to be unguarded at times as compare to man-to-man defense.
In zone defenses, there are a few variations of defense:
2-3 Zone Defense
The 2-3 zone consists of 2 players positioned slightly above the free throw line and the 3 players will be at along the baseline. This zone is to prevent the opponent from shooting near or under the basket.3-2 Zone Defense
The 3-2 zone consists of 1 player positioned at the free throw line, 2 players at the left and right wing, then 2 players stationed at the low post or baseline area. This allow the wings to push more pressure.1-3-1 Zone Defense
The 1-3-1 zone consists of 1 player positioned at the top of the key, 1 player at the free throw line plus 2 players at the left and right wing, then 1 player stationed in the lane near the basket. This zone forms a "+" formation to disallow the opponents from driving into the lane and shooting from outside.1-2-2 Zone Defense
The 1-2-2 zone defense consists of 1 player positioned at the top of the key, 2 players either stationed at the wings or at the left and right side of the free throw line, then 2 players will be at near the baseline.2-1-2 Zone Defense
The 2-1-2 zone defense consists of 2 players positioned just above the free throw line, 1 player stationed in the lane between the basket and the free throw line, then 2 players at the left and right side of the baseline.Match Up Zone
The match up zone is a zone defense that matches the offensive structure.Man-To-Man Defense
Man-to-man defense is a type of defense in which each individual player match up against each offensive player. The defenders usually appoint by size, height and ability to be matched up with offensive players.
There are 3 types of man-to-man defense:
Straight Man-To-Man
It is an aggressive defense that gives a lot of pressure to the players with good shooting and ball handling skills. However, it can be affected to dribble penetration and on ball screens.Switching Man-To-Man
This defense means the defenders will switch their opponents in defense according to the motion type offenses. They will aggressively switch on all contacts screens. However, in some cases, it can cause certain mismatches.Sagging man-to-man
This type of defense can be very effective against weak outside shooting teams and against dribble penetration as the defenders go behind most screens. The disadvantage is that teams with good outside shooting have the upper hand.
Box-and-One Defense
The Box-and-one defense is a type of defense in which 4 players play zone defense and form themselves in a box to protect the basket, then 1 player plays man-to-man defense, marking the best offensive player on the other team.Naturally, the 2 big size players will be positioned under the basket, 2 smaller players will be at the free throw line. The best defensive player of the team will be selected to guard one on one with the best offensive player.
The idea of this defense is to stop the best offensive player from scoring points. However, it is easy to pass the ball to the middle of the box, exploiting the gap.
Beside forming a box to protect the basket, the teams can also form into a "Diamond-and-one" defense in which the 4 players form into a diamond pattern and 1 player playing man-to-man defense.
There is another variation called "Triangle-and-two defense" in which 3 defenders play zone defense by forming a triangle around the paint area and 2 players play man-to-man defense.
